About

The work is crystallising.

Congealing from unseen structures, hybrid realities and liminal spaces.

My interdisciplinary practice often exists in multi-work installation that includes writing, painting, photography and sculpture. Using automatic gesture, abstraction and pop colours or motifs I tell stories that explore notions of identity, perception and control with an aesthetic bordering psychedelic nostalgia.

Whilst I often use photography as a sketchbook, painting is the backbone of my practice. It bleeds into other mediums forming a continuous aesthetic language, particularly through the use of colour and abstraction of form. I mostly use acrylic, as well as ink, crayon and pastel. I work in a multi-layered approach, often on more than one piece at a time. This process creates a constant dialogue where paintings develop connections to one another as they emerge.

Fascinated by fantasy world building and game culture, my ongoing practice haunts the wet sands and decaying glitz of British seaside towns and their arcades. Through these locations I examine the palimpsest of identities and otherworldly stories that exist between the flashing lights and boardwalk planks.

BIO

In 2014 Suzi Bratt received her BA in Art and Design from the University of Leeds, UK, where she specialised in sculpture and undertook an additional year in industry. Before, during and after her studies she suffered a series of tragic family bereavements, leading her to develop a studio practice at home, with a focus on painting. After many years of working as both a practicing artist and arts facilitator, she began her Masters journey, studying Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art in London from 2023 to 2024.

Bratt has exhibited nationally, most notably at the Tate Modern as part of CAP Cinema for Tate Lates and at the Royal College of Art, Battersea, for her graduate degree show RCA2024. During her studies she was shortlisted for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2024 and the Arts Thread Global Creative Talent Showcase 2024.
